A fundraiser in support of The Victoria Brain Injury Society

Picture
Whether caused by a car accident, tumour, stroke or concussion a brain injury can have severe impacts on a person's life. The cognitive, emotional and physical effects can be devastating. Victoria Brain Injury Society (VBIS) provides support, education and advocacy to people on Southern Vancouver Island with acquired brain injuries, their families and friends to empower them and maximize their quality of life.  To learn more about VBIS visit our website.

With the dramatic increase in new clients over the past few years, our ability to provide timely service has suffered and thus there can be lengthy waiting lists for those requiring our services.  Your support will help ensure that VBIS is able to provide our clients with support and resources when they need them.

Meet Andy: A Brain Injury Survivor who shares his story.

We believe in providing opportunities for people to experience life in a typical way, with emphasis on the individual’s abilities and ensuring that a supportive
atmosphere exists with appropriate supports to facilitate freedom of choice in the least restrictive way possible. We believe we are accountable to our clients and their families for the services we provide, ensuring that individuals supported by our service regain some control over their lives. We are also accountable to the funding agencies to ensure compatibility with their mandates and cost-effective use of limited resources. Most importantly, we believe that the majority of brain injuries are preventable and the most cost-effective approach to the problem is the development of effective prevention strategies.

Causes
The most common cause of brain injury is a trauma to the head, such as in a motor vehicle crash, a fall, a violent assault, or an industrial accident.
The brain is damaged by the collisions of the brain and the interior of the skull, as well as by rotational forces that occur within the brain tissue.
Other causes of brain injury include stroke, brain aneurysm, brain tumors, certain viruses, and substance abuse.

Services
Your purchase of gala tickets and auction items helps to support over 12 different programs that support brain injury survivors and their families. these programs take people from being in crisis to being able to be active community members with the resources and skills they need to maximize their quality of life.
